NextGen 911 (NG911)
What is
NextGen 911?
Next Generation 911 (NG911) is a brand-new system that will replace the old 911 system. It’s like getting a new and improved version of your phone with more features.
With NG911, you can send photos, videos, and text messages to 911 in addition to making voice calls. This means that you can share important information with 911 operators, even if you can’t speak.
NG911 also makes it easier for 911 operators to help you. They can see your location on a map and transfer your call to the correct 911 center if you’re in the wrong place.
Upgrading to NG911 will take some time and effort, but it’s worth it. NG911 will make 911 more efficient and reliable, which could save lives.
Around the US
The adoption of NG911 systems is rapidly increasing across the United States. With over 40 states and jurisdictions already on board, more and more public safety professionals have the latest information available to provide the best possible service to our communities.
Current 911 Process
Citizens dial 10-digit numbers for emergency services. Others dial 9-1-1, which may lead to an administrative line. Some calls are routed to neighboring counties. The receiving PSAP forwards information to the Navajo Police Department Police Dispatcher. In some cases, the call may be transferred directly without caller or location information.
Current Capabilities
Across the Navajo Nation, there are seven dispatch centers located in Window Rock, Shiprock, Crownpoint, Tuba City, Chinle, Kayenta, and Dilkon. Unfortunately, none of these centers possess the capability to receive or process Enhanced 9-1-1 (E9-1-1) calls, which include Automatic Number Identification (ANI) and Automatic Location Information (ALI) data. Despite this limitation, the Tuba City district does have E9-1-1 Customer Premise Equipment (CPE), commonly referred to as Call Works, which receives wireless and wireline 9-1-1 calls. However, it’s important to note that location information is not obtainable through this equipment.
